Melacia Griggs is a 20 year old summer intern working at The Door which has placed her at the Gateway Center. She is a “Grady Baby” born in Atlanta but grew up in Riverdale.
How did you hear about the Gateway Center?
I was placed at the Gateway Center by an organization called DOOR. A friend told me about DOOR and I joined them because I felt like I shared the same mission and ideals as they did – which was wanting to help people.
What is your favorite part about working at the Gateway Center?
I like doing the nail clinics for our clients, but my favorite part is helping to make others smile through showing love and bringing out the goodness in others.
What is one of the happiest moments of your life so far?
Being baptized at 19 years old.
What is your favorite food? What do you like to do in your free time?
My favorite food is Chinese food, my favorite dish is egg foo yung and spring rolls. In my free time I make jewelry, and I write poetry about personal experiences, family, and guidance. I also enjoy talking walks through the city listening to music and taking all the sights in.
If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?
I would like to be hanging out somewhere with a beach, maybe Hawaii. I think it would be really peaceful.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years I see myself either studying or working in the nursing/pediatrics field because I enjoy working with kids. I would also be thinking about starting a family, but I wouldn’t want to be in Atlanta. I like it here, but I want to be living somewhere else. I want to step outside the box.
